Apprentice Ensembles Programme

The Apprentice Ensemble scheme, now entering its 13th year, offers frequent mentoring sessions with ConTempo Quartet and performing opportunities to emerging, talented young performing groups.

The current Apprentice Ensembles are:

Incantato String Quartet

The Incantato String Quartet was formed in January 2018 under the mentorship of Keith Pascoe. The members of the quartet are Inana Garis (1st violin), Anna McKenna (2nd violin), Dionne Tims (viola) and Peadar O Loinsigh (cello). Inana, Anna and Dionne attend DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.

In February of 2018, they participated in their first masterclass with the Fidelio Trio, and in May received further masterclasses from the Vogler Quartet at the Sligo International Chamber Music Festival. To date, the ensemble has performed in the John Field Room at the National Concert Hall and the Irish Georgian Society. In late April, the quartet performed Jane O Leary’s ‘Mystic Play of Shadows’ as part of the Contemporary Music Centre’s ‘Musical Tales 2018’. The Boyle Arts Festival have engaged the quartet to play in a lunchtime concert in July of 2018.

The Incantato String Quartet are currently working on expanding their repertoire and persuing performance opportunities at future events

Euterpe Wind Quintet

Danielle Rogan, Flute; Maria Rojas, Oboe; Alaa Jahshan, Clarinet; Laura Slanc, Bassoon; Niamh Huethorst, French Horn

Euterpe met at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in 2017, where they are all current full-time performance students on the Bachelor and Master programmes. They are an international ensemble with members from Mexico, Croatia, Jordan and Ireland. The goddess Euterpe was the Greek muse of music, in particular wind instruments, and she brings good fortune for the group. Euterpe hopes to boost the popularity of the underrepresented wind quintet genre and has an interest in twentieth century and contemporary Irish music, as well as interpreting classical repertoire. They are pleased and excited to be a Galway Music Residency Apprentice Ensemble for 2018-2019.

Dina Ryan and Aoife Moran

Dina Ryan and Aoife Moran are both 4th year students of the Bachelor of Music performance degree at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. Dina studies clarinet with Paul Roe and Aoife studies piano with Catherina Lemoni-O’Doherty. They receive chamber music coaching from Keith Pascoe.

Dina and Aoife have been playing chamber music together since autumn 2016, performing a wide range of repertoire including Schubert, Webern, O’Leary, Lutosławski, and also collaborating with other musicians to form trios and quartets. They very much look forward to exploring new repertoire, engaging audiences with contemporary compositions and presenting their own interpretations of well-known works.

They have performed in venues such as the NCH John Field Room, and public libraries as part of the CMC ‘Musical Tales’ series. Dina and Aoife are delighted to take part in the Galway Residency Apprentice Ensemble programme.

Voldemort String Quartet

The Voldemort Quartet are Rex Roddy and Diarmuid Hancock on violin (both 10 years of age), Sean Hancock (12 years) on viola and Euan Farrell (11 years) on cello. While they live in different parts of County Galway and Clare, they are all students of Coole Music & Arts in Gort, Co Galway where they receive their individual, orchestral and chamber music lessons. The boys first met in Coole Music Discovery Orchestra in 2015 and have been playing together as a quartet since. They have participated in the Annual IAYO Chamber Music Course twice and have performed at numerous community events as well as on the streets of Galway. And as their quartet name might give away: they all like Harry Potter!
