Lunchtime with ConTempo 1st November

  • St Nicholas' Collegiate Church
  • 01 November 2016 at 1:10pm
  • Free Admission

The Galway Music Residency’s Lunchtimes with ConTempo continues next Tuesday 1st November at 1:10pm. This popular series, which takes place in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, focuses on the late string quartets of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809).

The Galway ConTempo Quartet will perform String Quartet Op. 76, No. 3 next Tuesday, the third work in Haydn’s last complete set of string quartets, which the composer dedicated to the Hungarian count, Joseph Georg von Erdődy. This work, composed in 1796 or 1797, has long been nicknamed ‘Emperor’ due to the second movement’s exploration of a number of variations on “God Save Emperor Frances”, a theme that Haydn wrote for Emperor Frances II. This theme was later used in the German National Anthem we know today, Deutschlandlied.

Supported by The Arts Council, NUI Galway and Galway City and County Councils, admission to this event is free, open to all and early arrival is recommended. Lunchtimes with ConTempo will take place on the first Tuesday of each month (September-June excepting January).
