Expect a true feast for the senses when The Galway Ensemble in Residence: ConTempo Quartet and Chen Zimbalista, renowned international percussionist take to the stage at The Galway Arts Festival, Saturday, July 24th at 8:00 p.m. in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.
This concert will see the realisation of a dream for the resident quartet in Galway as they play for the very first time “Black Angels” by American composer George Crumb. This challenging piece has a global cult following and is widely recognised as one of the most challenging ensemble pieces ever written. This anti war piece inspired by the Vietnam War was written 40 years ago but is still startling and hypnotic in its appeal. “Con Tempo Quartet are hugely excited to be given the opportunity to perform this piece” said Adrian Mantu, Cellist with the quartet, “We are delighted that the arts festival have agreed to include it in this year’s programme. We are also truly looking forward to playing with Chen Zimbalista whose vibrant performances we have enjoyed and admired for some time.”
Chen Zimbalista’s stage performances have been described as explosive, energetic and riveting. At the arts festival with ConTempo he will perform “Concerto for Marimba and Strings” by Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro. In addition, Zimbalista will play an exciting selection of percussion solos from his current repertoire. He is the winner of several international competitions and has performed at the Kennedy Center, with the Detroit Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic, and the Symphonica Brazilera, to name just a few.

Shorelines Arts Festival 2010
The Galway Ensemble in Residence, ConTempo Quartet will perform for the first time in the Shorelines Arts Festival in Portumna, Co. Galway. The programme includes a selection of classical favorites by Haydn, Debussy and Schumann.
Now in its third year, Shorelines Arts Festival is a premier midlands arts festival, incorporating a full spectrum of arts events all packed into one weekend.
Shorelines Arts Festival began in 2008 after discussions between members of Portumna Arts Group to hold a one day arts festival in Portumna. It was decided after much thought that if we were going to organise a one day festival, we might as well put in the extra effort and make it a full weekend.
Shorelines Arts Festival takes place on about the third weekend of September each year (depending on what other events are planned for that time).
Shorelines Arts Festival tries to cover the full range of the arts, including:
• Drama
• Poetry
• Literature
• Art
• Photography
• Film
• Dance
• Sculpture
