Education Excellence

GMR and ConTempo have been busy since the start of the academic year providing high-quality education opportunities through a host of programmes.

Apprentice Ensembles

In September, ConTempo began mentoring our four new Apprentice Ensembles through monthly workshops. During these sessions, the ensembles learn to hone their ensemble-playing skills and musicianship. Some of our ensembles also had the chance to work with world-renowned clarinetist Emma Johnson earlier this month, who was visiting Galway as part of Music for Galway's International Concert Season. We were delighted to work with Music for Galway on this amazing opportunity. Our Ensembles have also been busy on stage. On Thursday 18 October, our junior ensemble - The Voldemort Quartet - performed at the Baboró International Arts Festival for Children. On Saturday 20 October, Incantato String Quartet performed in Clonfert Cathedral as part of the Architecture at the Edge Festival. Be sure to catch all four or our Apprentice Ensembles in concert on 27th January 2019 at 3pm in the Emily Anderson Concert Hall and again on Wednesday 24th April at 1pm as part of the Music for Galway/Arts in Action initiative. Both concerts are FREE.

Sym-phonic Waves

GMR continues to work with Music Generation's youth orchestra for the West of Ireland - Sym-phonic Waves - this academic year. ConTempo provides regular sectional workshops and mentoring to the members of the orchestra.

NUI Galway

Since September, ConTempo have been working with the students of the BA in Music (with Dr Aidan Thomson) and MA in Writing (with Dr John Kenny) through two separate series of workshops. The BA in Music workshops focus on a journey through the history of music, while the MA in Writing workshops explore the links between literature and musical composition.

Upcoming Education Projects

Later this month, ConTempo will be working with the NUI Galway Concert Orchestra, providing sectional workshops and specialized rehearsals. The quartet will also be providing Aural Skills Workshops to Leaving Cert Students from across the city and county. Finally, GMR and ConTempo Quartet are working with the Westside, Ballybane and Galway City Libraries on a special Lifelong Learning project. Members of book clubs from each library will join ConTempo for a series of sessions exploring the links between poetry and music.
