From Europe with Love: Year One

In September 2018 The Galway Music Residency launched an ambitious new Lunchtime with ConTempo project entitled From Europe with Love. This three-year initiative will celebrate the shared musical heritage of the European Union by exploring the string quartet repertoire from each of its 27 member countries.

Part one of the project presented nine concerts from September 2018 to June 2019 (excepting January), on the first Tuesday of each month at 1:10pm in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.

A special part of this series is the guest speakers we invite to introduce the concerts each month. They serve as our ambassadors to the country of the day, and many of them are ambassadors to Ireland, such as Mr. Petr Kynštetr, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Ireland, H.E. Uffe A. Balslev, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Ireland, and Igor Pokojný, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to Ireland.

Many of our guest speakers are Europeans who have made Galway and the west of Ireland their home - from visual artist Vicki Crowley (nee Xuereb) who is a Maltese native living in Galway since 1970; to Paolo Bartoloni, a Professor of Italian Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway; to music teacher and choir conductor Skarleta Mukane who hails from the Latvian capital, Riga; Maria Manuela de Almeida Silva, a PhD in Law candidate NUI Galway and a trained Portuguese/Spanish interpreter originally from Lisbon and has been living in Galway for over 20 years; to Fabienne Hardy of Galway's much loved brasserie style French restaurant Rouge.

On Tuesday July 16th at 1pm we will be holding a highlights of year 1 concert in St. Nicholas Collegiate Church and From Europe with Love is back for year two on September 3rd with music from Germany.
