GMR Announces New Commission

Following a call for submissions last March, composer Greg Caffrey has been selected by the Galway Music Residency (GMR) and Galway City Council Arts Office to compose a new work for ConTempo Quartet.

The work is being commissioned as part of a three-year initiative led by the Galway City Council Arts Office and GMR. Caffrey and the composers selected for the 2019 and 2020 commissions will compose works for string quartet to be premiered by the Galway ConTempo Quartet during Music & Musings.

This Music & Musings concert series presented by GMR in association with the Contemporary Music Centre aims to present Galway audiences with new music of the highest quality, in an informal yet intimate setting, promoting discussion with musicians, composers and audience members. Caffrey's new work will be heard in November 2018 as part of the Autumn season of Music & Musings.

Caffrey has previously been commissioned by the Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble, Izumi Kimura, RTÉ, BBC Radio 3 and The Ulster Orchestra. His compositions have been performed in Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Argentina, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Estonia, U.S. Bangkok, China and Brazil, receiving critical acclaim. More recently he has been responsible for the artistic directorship of Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble, Northern Ireland’s only ensemble entirely devoted to contemporary and 20th Century music repertoire. Caffrey is a Contemporary Music Centre represented composer.

The Galway Music Residency is supported by NUI Galway, the Arts Council, Galway City and County Councils and GMIT.
