GMR announces new series: MUSIC & MUSINGS
The Galway Music Residency is delighted to announce its new series in association with the Contemporary Music Centre – Music & Musings. This series of short concerts featuring the Galway ConTempo Quartet, emerging and established composers from Ireland and guest artists, begins on Friday 20 October at 8.30pm in the Black Gate Cultural Centre. The series will present high quality chamber music in an intimate setting, along with opportunities to eat, drink and meet the artists and composers.
The series begins with an exploration of Kevin Volans’ well known work White Man Sleeps. Written in 1982, it was the first of his compositions to reach a wide audience performed by the Kronos Quartet, who subsequently shot to international fame. ConTempo will perform this extraordinary piece alongside a selection of Bela Bartók’s works in his unique ‘Night Music’ style. The performances will be interspersed with conversations with Kevin Volans and the quartet, chaired by the Contemporary Music Centre.
The second instalment of the series will feature the world premiere of Amanda Feery’s new piece for string quartet and uilleann pipes – Something Like Light But Not. This exciting work was co-commissioned by the Galway City Council and will be performed by the Galway ConTempo Quartet and renowned piper Pádraic Keane. ConTempo will also perform Jane O’Leary’s The Passing Sound of Forever, while Pádraic Keane will perform a short solo set. Again the performances will be punctuated by discussion between composers and artists, with audience participation welcome.
Tickets for these unique events cost €12/€7 and can be purchased at www.eventbrite.ie or on the door.
