Music in Castles
The Galway Music Residency is delighted to announce its ‘Music in Castles’ series. In this exclusive three-part series across one July weekend, The Galway ConTempo Quartet explores the castles of Galway County performing a selection of works befitting these grand and historic spaces. Supported by the Office of Public Works and Claregalway Castle, this series is a rare opportunity to hear the halls of Galway’s castles filled with exquisite music.
The first of these unique events takes place on 8th July at 7pm in the elegant Renaissance-style Portumna castle, built between 1610 and 1618. On the 9th of July at 8pm, ConTempo will perform a special extended concert in the beautiful Claregalway castle, a 15th century Anglo-Norman tower house sitting on the banks of the river Clare. To close this magical series, ConTempo will visit Athenry Castle on 10th July at 5pm, the oldest and most historic castle in the series built in the 13th century.
With the themes of summer and nature at the heart of the Music in Castle’s programme, these concerts will feature works by Mozart, Haydn, Borodin, Mendelssohn, Dvořák and Irish composer David Flynn.
